When Janice Moore was named principal of Aire Libre Elementary School, she brought more than 20 years education experience, a track record for student achievement excellence and a penchant for Beat the Odds principles to the position.
For six previous years, she was principal of Campo Bello Elementary School, also in the Paradise Valley Unified School District. In a twist of fate, before Beat the Odds Institute was founded, Good To Great by Jim Collins was required reading in the district.
When Moore learned that a research study on successful Arizona schools had been conducted, based upon Jim Collins' inspiration and methodology, and a leadership institute for principals had been created, she was eager to participate.
After three years of participation with Campo Bello and now with Aire Libre in its third year as a partner school, Moore says "Beat the Odds is the best mentoring and training a principal can get. When I was at Campo Bello, I was proud of the way that the staff, students, parents and community volunteers worked together to increase student achievement.
