Beat the Odds
North Canyon High School is one of seven schools in Arizona with minority-intensive, low-income student populations that have met the criteria to be recognized as a “Beat the Odds School” and have received a Gold Award from Beat the Odds, an initiative of the Center for the Future of Arizona.
Beat the Odds is a rigorous, multi-year school improvement program providing mentoring and training for principals based on the methodology from the best-selling author Jim Collins. It focuses on K-12 schools where at least 50 percent of the students are on free and reduced lunch and at least 50 percent of the students are a minority, primarily Latino.
In order to earn the Gold Award Level, schools must have three years of participation in the program, formative assessment data demonstrating academic progress across the majority of grade levels, the superintendent's recommendation, plus other criteria.
