Learning Goal #1 Metrics

  • All schools will collaboratively develop a professional learning plan.

School / Department Strategies 

  • In the 17-18 school year the faculty participated in the 18-19 Professional Development Survey
  • The SMHS Faculty identified student engagement as the professional development focus for the 18-19 school year
  • The three professional development days before school began were all focused on student engagement and how it impacts student achievement and equity
  • All SMHS teachers and administrators attended the equity presentation by Dominique Smith which centered on student engagement strategies as a way to enhance equity
  • Student engagement professional development will revolve around Marzano and Pickering’s The Highly Engaged Classroom, specifically around the psychology of engagement, with additional information coming from Building Equity.
  • Each week a new student engagement strategy is highlighted in the SMHS Bulletin
  • Each faculty meeting will be focused on student engagement strategies
  • We have adopted the following school-wide goal on equity “In the 2018-2019 school year SMHS will introduce and use engagement strategies to improve equity and student academic achievement.”
  • We have developed a Targeted School Intervention plan to help student subgroups who have been identified as underperforming.
  • SMHS is adding professional development in formative assessments and metacognition based on the results of the analysis conducted for the Targeted School Intervention plan
  • Develop various pathways and procedures to enable each student to have access to have  authentic, real-world learning experiences across the curriculum and grade span.

  • AFJROTC will participate in the Stellar Explorers Program
  • AFJROTC will offer eligible candidates the opportunity to attend flight school sponsored by the Air Force
  • SMHS will continue to support and develop the REAL lab
  • SMHS will apply to use capital funding to improve the Culinary Arts Lab
  • SMHS will continue to support Veterans Heritage Project to give students real-world experience  in interviewing veterans and publishing their stories in “Since You Asked…”
  • SMHS will compete in the Az Skills Competition
  • SMHS will compete in the Solar Car Competition at University of Arizona
  • A usage audit will be completed on district adopted CTE curricula
  • SMHS will measure student enrollment in courses/programs characterized by the application of skills.
  • The North Valley Arts Academy will develop an internship Program for seniors in NVAA
  • DAAPS will provide a college-like capstone project for seniors to prepare them for college
  • SMHS will continue to support and develop the Transition Program on our campus to give our special needs students real-life training and experience
  • SMHS Band will be visited by the Army Band to help students understand what it takes to become a professional musician
  • SMHS Orchestra will be visited by Dr. Marcin Arendt from Az Musicfest to talk about what it takes to be a professional musician
  • SMHS 2D Art will participate in the Shemer New horizons Exhibition, showing student art in a real gallery format
  • NVAA will partner with The Rock to give students opportunities to practice/how their art publically
  • SMHS Drama will partner with Marvel/Disney to pilot Marvel One Acts and give feedback to Marvel/Disney on their experience
  • Provide a rigorous Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum (GVC) through focused professional development, effective differentiated instruction, and strategic assessments.

School / Department Strategies

  • SMHS will continue the process of the ongoing review of curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • SMHS Math will continue to implement and refine all three levels of GVC Math (Algebra1-2, Geometry, Algebra 3-4)
  • SMHS Math teachers will give Az Mimic tests to students to demonstrate student growth
  • SMHS Math
    teachers will meet in their PLCs to analyze common formative assessment data to
    help inform instructional practices and to help improve the GVC
  • SMHS Administrators will meet with each Math teacher about student growth indicators
    in post-observations and evaluations over the course of the school year
  • SMHS ELA teachers will adopt the GVC curriculum at all four levels of English
  • SMHS ELA teachers will meet in their PLCs to analyze common formative assessment data to
    help inform instructional practices and to help improve the GVC
  • SMHS Administrators will meet with each ELA teacher about student growth indicators in post-observations and evaluations over the course of the school year
  • Future GVC Committees will have at least one SMHS per academic level and a SMHS administrator participating (we anticipate GVC for Science and Social Studies on the horizon)

School / Department Strategies

  • Shadow Mountain High School’s administration and faculty have made developing positive relationships a priority in the 2018/2019 school year.  The school-wide goal this year is “In the 2018-2019 School year SMHS will introduce and use engagement strategies to improve student academic achievement.”
  • SMHS will be using Marzano’s “The Highly Engaged Classroom” as a template to enhance student engagement, specifically targeting building positive student/teacher relationships to enhance engagement.
  • The entire SMHS faculty attended the training with Dominique Smith on building positive Student/Teacher relationships
  • The focus of the training before school began, and each of the professional development half days is enhancing engagement through building positive relationships
  • In the weekly SMHS Bulletin teachers are introduced to an engagement technique from Robert Marzano’s “The Highly Engaged Classroom” that is designed to build positive teacher/student relationships
  • Monthly the principal meets with the Principal Advisory Committee to help build positive student/principal relationships
  • SMHS will found a “Native American Club” to help our Native American Students feel included and valued on our campus
  • Create procedures to eliminate barriers so that all students can participate and experience success in high quality curricular and extracurricular programs.

  • SMHS will adopt recommendations from the district Delta Committee
  • SMHS will support and grow the AVID program to help under-represented students find success in AP/Honors Classes
  • SMHS will fund an after-school tutoring program to help students in identified subgroups to have academic success in their classes
  • SMHS received professional development on building positive student relationships through the lens of improving equity and diversity
  • SMHS will fund a coaching stipend for Unified Track to develop our program
  • SMHS will continue to support and develop Unified Athletics, Unified Art, and Unified Music for our students with special needs
  • SMHS Administrators will identify students with three or more A’s in the first
    semester of 9th & 10th grade and join with counselors to encourage their
    participation in AP and Honors classes, increasing Honors/AP enrollment for ALL
    of our students

  • SMHS will conduct an equity survey to gauge student perception on opportunities for minority students and equity
