About Our Visual Arts Program

The North Valley Arts Academies (NVAA) Visual Arts Program combines the use of traditional tools with today's modern technology. Students will explore a vast array of artistic media, coding, web design, photography, and more. As your child progresses through the course plan, he or she will narrow the scope of their work, specializing and refining their techniques, with the goal of creating students looking to excel in an art-related career. 

To join the NVAA Visual Arts Program there is an application process. Students must complete the application in order to enroll into the Visual Arts Program.

Visual Arts Instructor Bio

Jennifer Jardine has been teaching Visual Art in Arizona for 11 years. She received her BFA from Arizona State University and is a working artist specializing in oil painting. Most recently she was awarded "Scottsdale Artist of the Year" by the Scottsdale Artist League. In 2019, Voyage Phoenix Magazine chose her as one of Phoenix's premier artists and featured her artwork in a series titled "Hidden Gems." She is a proud member of Arizona Art Education Association and the National Art Education Association.

Student-Acquired Skills

Students who are enrolled into the visual arts program will acquire skills that will transfer into the student's everyday life. Students will continue to build and enhance many of these skills, enabling them to effectively communicate with others verbally, as well as through written forms of communication. The students will begin to take on leadership roles and overseeing and management of projects and much more!

Visual Arts Course Plan

Intro to Studio

9th Grade

This introductory course will cultivate a strong foundation for a lasting career and love for the arts. Students will explore art history and the elements and principles of design while they experiment with a wide variety of mediums including, ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, graphic design, 3D printing and photography. Field trips to museums, studios, and businesses around our community will introduce students to the vast and exciting careers available in the field of art. Guest artists will share their skills and experiences in their area of expertise as they work with students in the classroom. Students will photograph their work and create a website to document their journey throughout their high school career. This portfolio will grow to be a great resource for college and internship opportunities.

 

2D Visual Art

10th Grade

This course will offer students the opportunity to further explore two-dimensional design. Students will refine their skills in a variety of mediums including: painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, web design, graphic design, and photography. Field trips to museums, studios, and businesses around our community will introduce students to the vast and exciting careers available in the field of art. Guest artists will share their skills and experiences in their area of expertise as they work with students in the classroom. Students will begin to build a body of work to be displayed in venues around the community as well as on their personal website.

 

Exploration in Sculpture

9th and 10th Grades

This course will concentrate on the the study of three-dimensional design and the variety of materials artists use to create sculpture. Students will have the opportunity to create in clay, wood, wire, glass, metal and 3D printing. Training with the various tools used to shape each medium will help students broaden their abilities and refine their individual styles. Problem solving and artistic development will occur as students plan, revise and reflect on their process. A deeper understanding of sculpture will be gained by analyzing 3D works from various time periods and cultures. Field trips to museums, studios, and businesses around our community will introduce students to the vast and exciting careers available in the field of art. Guest artists will share their skills and experiences in their area of expertise as they work with students in the classroom. Students will photograph their work and create a website to document their journey throughout their high school career. This portfolio will grow to be a great resource for college and internship opportunities.

 

Advanced 2D Visual Art (Commencing 2019-20)

11th Grade

This advanced course is designed for self-motivated and dedicated students who want to create a unified body of 2D work. Areas of study may include painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, web design, graphic design, or photography. The artist will use their studio time to refine their personal style and create an artist statement for exhibitions of their artwork. An artist website and digital portfolio will be created and grow to be a big resource for college and internship opportunities. Students will learn how to market their artwork and apply for a multitude of opportunities available in the community. Field trips to museums, studios, and businesses around our community will introduce students to the vast and exciting careers available in the field of art. Guest artists will share their skills and experiences in their area of expertise as they work with students in the classroom.

 

Advanced Sculpture Techniques (Commencing 2019-20)

11th Grade

Students will further explore the concepts of sculpture as they create 3D works of art with clay, wood, wire, glass, metal and 3D printing. This course is dedicated to building upon the students established foundation of knowledge and skill as it pertains to tools, materials and processes. Students will begin to narrow their scope with the goal of creating a unified body of work. An artist website and digital portfolio will be created and grow to be a big resource for college and internship opportunities. Students will learn how to market their artwork and apply for a multitude of opportunities available in the community. Field trips to museums, studios, and businesses around our community will introduce students to the vast and exciting careers available in the field of art. Guest artists will share their skills and experiences in their area of expertise as they work with students in the classroom.

 

Exit Portfolio in 2D Visual Arts (Commencing 2020-21)

12th Grade

This advanced course is designed for self-motivated and dedicated students who want to create a unified body of work. The artist will use their studio time to refine their personal style and create an artist statement for exhibitions of their work. An artist website and digital portfolio will be created and grow to be a big resource for college and internship opportunities. Students will learn how to market their artwork and apply for a multitude of opportunities available in the community. Field trips to museums, studios, and businesses around our community will introduce students to the vast and exciting careers available in the field of art. Guest artists will share their skills and experiences in their area of expertise as they work with students in the classroom. The focus and objective of the exit portfolio shows the artist has explored a theme with multiple pieces and the student has focused a majority of the artwork from one medium: painting, drawing, printmaking, graphic design, photographic processes.

 

Exit Portfolio in 3D Visual Arts (Commencing 2019-20)

12th Grade

This advanced course is designed for self-motivated and dedicated students who want to create a unified body of work. Areas of study may include ceramics, sculpture and 3D printing. The artist will use their studio time to refine their personal style and create an artist statement for exhibitions of their work. An artist website and digital portfolio will be created and grow to be a big resource for college and internship opportunities. Students will learn how to market their artwork and apply for a multitude of opportunities available in the community. Field trips to museums, studios, and businesses around our community will introduce students to the vast and exciting careers available in the field of art. Guest artists will share their skills and experiences in their area of expertise as they work with students in the classroom. The focus and objective of the exit portfolio shows the artist has explored a theme with multiple pieces and the student has focused a majority of their artwork working in 3D sculpture.
