What Is Immersion?
In foreign language immersion programs, the regular school curriculum is taught in the immersion language for part or all of the day. In Sandpiper's Dual Language Spanish Immersion (DLSI) program, English-speaking students will spend half of the instructional school day learning subjects in Spanish and the other half learning in English. Students are taught the regular school curriculum with the same expectation of mastery, but they will hear the subject matter in Spanish.
Why Should I Consider Immersion?
Learning a second language can have long-term educational benefits for your student, and research has shown that immersion is the most effective way to learn a language. The process of learning a second language at an early age has a positive effect on intellectual growth and enriches and enhances a child's mental development. Bilingual students typically perform better than monolingual students on tasks that call for divergent thinking, pattern recognition and problem solving. Additionally, bilingual students will have a head start on college requirements and will experience increased job opportunities in many careers where knowing another language is an asset.
When Can My Child Begin?
Back in 2016-2017, our program began to include all grades K-6 and Pre-K for 4 year olds. If you have a child ready for these grades and want to discover more about DLSI, please call the Sandpiper Office to schedule a tour or to attend our next open house. This is the only Spanish immersion program in the Paradise Valley Unified School District, and enrollment is limited, so call today!
