Equity Goal Objective 1

Develop relationships that support and foster social, emotional, and academic needs to ensure individual student success.

School Strategies

  • Leadership Development - Administration team looking at professional development to attend as a team. There are many opportunities, but look to attend those that reflect our greatest area of need.

  • Targeted academic support - Utilizing programs in place and looking to embrace the “whole student” in every aspect (social, emotional, cognitive) of their school experience. The goal is that every child has the specific academic support necessary to be successful in school. This may include a variety of academic intervention services and strategies in foundational areas or broader skill sets necessary for academic success.

  • Intervention programs, both academic and non-academic - After the Bell, Title 1, Intervention coach, and many other programs in place.  Continue to monitor and adjust these programs to fit the needs of our student population. We have many of these programs, such as, mentors, tutors, homework clubs, after-school programs, and summer school programs that will support all students in gaining an equal footing as they progress through school.

Equity Goal Objective 2

Create procedures to eliminate barriers so that all students can participate and experience success in high quality curricular and extracurricular programs.

School Strategies

  • Data analysis to assess causes of inequity - Specifically identify problems with our current strategies, programs and practices, but also identify and highlight strategies and practices that successfully promote equity, diversity, and a safe environment for all students in our school. Drill down to classroom level to assist teachers.

  • Staff professional development - Provide systematic professional development  to staff related to equity, diversity, and to creating a school environment free of bias, prejudice, discrimination, and any form of intimidation or violence. Help staff develop better understanding of the causes of inequities, of disproportionate rates of school success, and of biases. Offer training and support to develop strategies and action steps to overcome these problems effectively.  Restorative Justice and PBIS are some examples.

  • Co-curricular and extra-curricular programs - We will continue to assure that student participation in co-curricular and extra-curricular programs and activities is equitable. Our programs will be evaluated to ensure that they meet the needs of the many diverse segments of our student body and are reflective of the wide range of interests in our community.

  • Clinical support - Education, screening, and treatment are all key preconditions for equitable access to other school services. We will continue to assist school staff (nurses, psychologists, counselors, social workers) work with families, professionals, and agencies in the community to ensure the physical, dental, nutritional, emotional, and mental health of all students, particularly those who may have had less access to these services. This along with the Health and Wellness grant will promote safe and healthy choice making for our students.

Equity Goal Objective 3

To develop cultural competence within North Canyon that results in equity for students.

School Strategies

  • Research and implement “best practices” regarding equity and diversity management utilized by other districts and organizations - Classes and groups like Beyond Tolerance Foundations of Leadership  and MSAN are two examples of programs in place. Identify programs that other districts and organizations have used with success and that are supported by evaluative research. Where applicable, introduce into NCHS.

  • Leadership Development - We will work with the district student services and site leadership team to develop leadership skills, understanding, and strategies in support of equity, diversity, and a safe environment

  • Communication - We will strive to clearly communicate PVSchools' strategies and efforts to promote equity, diversity and a safe environment. We will continue to evaluate and acknowledge problems where they exist and use effective communication strategies to dispel rumors and elicit community support to address problems. It is our goal to celebrate successes and accomplishments of all students and staff, particularly those who don’t often share the spotlight.

  • Classes and groups like Beyond Tolerance Foundations of Leadership and MSAN are two examples of programs in place. Identify programs that other districts and organizations have used with success and that are supported by evaluative research. Where applicable, introduce into NCHS.

  • Cultural and educational events - Through various events we will engage the community in support of the district’s equity and diversity goals and strategies. Some of these events include Cultural Night sponsored by AVID and Love our School Day. We want to find ways to take advantage of the rich diversity of cultural and educational resources in our community to showcase our diverse community.
