Doubles Badminton Champions

Emily Newton and Tori Pepe

Two seniors at Horizon High School won the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Division II State Doubles Badminton Championship on Nov. 7. Newton and Pepe defeated Campo Verde High School during the competition held at Independence High School.

The final scores of the three matches for the championship title game were 21-19, 20-22, 21-13 with Newton and Tori winning the first and last games to ultimately win the title.

“This is Tori and Emily’s first year playing together as a doubles team and from the beginning, their goal was to become state champions together. They had to play 11 hard-fought matches to win this title. Even though there were tough moments and matches for them as a doubles team throughout the season and at state, their ultimate goal and promise to each other never wavered. Throughout the season and at the state championship they showed great determination and perseverance," said Coach Caela Consolian.

The championship to Newton and Pepe is an ultimate culmination of all of the time, effort, and hard work they have put into the Horizon badminton program throughout their high school careers. Coach Consolian explains, “It was something both girls really wanted for themselves, their team, and their school. Both girls are seniors and part of the class of 2021 so this was their last individual state championship and they wanted to end their career on the best note possible.  They truly left it all on the court and I am extremely proud of their hard work and everything they have accomplished. I can’t wait to see what they achieve in the future.”
