National School Nurse Day Honors Our Healthcare Heroes
Wednesday, May 12, 2021
During National School Nurse Day, May 12, PVSchools would like to recognize and thank our school nurses for taking on additional responsibilities during this unprecedented year. PVSchools is extremely fortunate to have a registered nurse at each of its school sites, and it’s reassuring to know that there is a nurse on campus to take care of the medical needs of our students and staff when they need it.
“Our school nurses are dedicated and committed to providing a warm and compassionate environment for our students. This year especially, our nurses have gone above and beyond to ensure that our students and staff are safe and healthy. From COVID-19 testing to our health and safety protocols, our nurses continue to provide a critical service for our students, staff, and families. I am grateful to be working with so many outstanding nursing professionals,” said Lora Herbein, director of Student Services - Elementary.
During the pandemic, the role of the school nurse expanded and is regarded as a crucial component of public health. In addition to bandaging scrapes and cuts, helping students overcome stomach aches or headaches, and administering medications, the focus of school nurses shifted to adapt and prepare for the global health crisis.
To prepare for in-person learning, an isolation area in each health office was created. As part of their daily routine, school nurses track positive cases on campus and initiate contact tracing procedures and guidelines, as well as reinforce safety protocols with students such as proper handwashing techniques, correctly wearing a face mask, and maintaining social distance.
To assist the district even further, school nurses volunteered to help administer COVID-19 vaccinations to PVSchools and Scottsdale Unified School District employees during the HonorHealth vaccination clinics. When PVSchools partnered with In Office Diagnostics (DX) to provide no-cost COVID-19 testing to students, staff, and the community, our nurses were trained to perform COVID-19 testing at their school site for students and staff.
PVSchools is incredibly proud of our school nurses and the work they do on behalf of students and staff members.
