Full STEAM Ahead

Learning for both teachers and students was the focus of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Extravaganza that was held at Desert Shadows Elementary School on March 1st.
Students rotated between science and engineering experiments, including astronomy in a mobile planetarium, math and physics concepts with catapults, analysis of combustion.
While students experienced hands-on STEAM learning, teachers were in engaged in meaningful professional development that will help them develop and incorporate STEAM lessons into the Teachers learning about STEAM curriculum. Working in groups, and under the guidance of Jessica Hickey, professional learning specialist with the Freeport-McMoRan Center for Leadership and Learning at Arizona Science Center, teachers collaborated to:
- Understand the definition of STEAM
- Explore the 5 E’s Instructional Model (engage, explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate)
- Participate in a STEAM lesson with an engineering focus
- Identify quality STEAM lessons
- Create a standards-based STEAM lesson/unit
The day could not have been possible if it weren’t for the parent volunteers, Employee Support Professionals and STEAM experts from the Arizona Science Center.
Desert Shadows Elementary incorporated a Suzuki Strings into the curriculum during the 2014-15 school year. Transitioning from an arts program to a STEAM program is a natural progression for the school. Desert Shadows Elementary School and the Arizona Science Center entered into a three-year partnership to implement a STEAM program.
