Principal Mr. Ontiveros Sets an Example with Parent Engagement

At Greenway Middle School, Principal Jorge Ontiveros is known for his unwavering commitment to parent participation and his genuine care for his staff and students. One of his most notable initiatives is his personal approach to Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTCs).

Every conference night, Mr. O, as many call him, makes it a point to shake hands with each parent who enters the school, welcoming them with a warm smile and a genuine interest in their concerns. He takes the time to ask about their child's progress, their experiences at Greenway, and any challenges they may be facing.

Parents appreciate Principal Ontiveros' attentiveness and his ability to connect with them on a personal level. They feel heard and valued, which encourages them to be more involved in their child's education.

When asked what motivates him to take this approach to Parent-Teacher Conferences, he told us that he himself grew up in a Hispanic family where his mother often was not able to provide the support he needed because she struggled with fear and shame of not knowing what to ask or how to ask for help. He believes that education is teamwork, and the relationships built with the families and teachers, staff, and himself are crucial. For Mr.O, “being able to shake the parent's hands and tell them we are here to support them is the greatest satisfaction of the night”.

Maria, one of Greenway’s parents, shared that Mr. O is very approachable, and she feels confident enough to come to the school because she knows she will always receive the help she needs. She commented that her son comes to school eager and motivated because he looks forward to hearing what music Mr. O will play at breaktime and what new things he has to say to them. Vanessa, one of the students, commented that Mr. Ontiveros is very involved with the students, and she knows he checks their grades, and that motivates her to do better because she wants him to be proud of her too. She said Mr. O always cheers his students at games and around the school, and it is very fun.
