Sonoran Sky Elementary Gifted Student Has Essay Published in the New York Times For Kids Section
Tuesday , May 25 , 2021
Kavin Premkumar, a fourth-grade student in the Self-Contained Gifted program at Sonoran Sky Elementary School, will have his essay on money published in the May issue of The New York Times For Kids (NYT Kids) section. Only six submissions were selected to be published in the May issue.
“When I found out that my essay would be published in the NYT Kids, I was truly astonished. I did not even suspect the possibility that this could happen,” said Premkumar.
The submitted essay was about his family who owned a restaurant from 2016 to very recently. “In my essay, I've written about the challenges we dealt with in this business. Even though running a business was hard, it teaches us many lessons, which probably I wouldn't have learned otherwise,” he said.
Premkumar learned about the NYT Kids contest from his teacher Deborah Arn. She encouraged students to give it a try. “I can't help feeling a little proud that my student has won this award, although the only thing I did was encourage Kavin to enter the contest. He wrote the essay on his own and simply stepped up to the challenge,” said Arn.
As an essay finalist, Premkumar will receive a $50 gift card. Premkumar will use a part of the gift card to buy books. He added, “I plan to donate the other part to the World Wildlife Fund, which I had been doing for the past year and a half.”
Arn added, “Kavin is a very bright and curious boy, and his being one of the finalists in this contest underscores how important it can be to take advantage of opportunities.”
The NYT Kids is published on the last Sunday of each month. Premkumar’s article will be published on May 30.
