Sandpiper Teacher Awarded $5K Grant from Fiesta Bowl Charities

Friday , November 01 , 2019

Phoenix's 3TV was on hand earlier this week when Sandpiper Elementary School teacher Amelia Cho received a very important call.

Cho, a second-grade Dual Language Spanish Immersion teacher, was in the middle of a parent-teacher conference when she received a call from Fiesta Bowl Charities. She found out she was one of the 200 teachers in Arizona who will receive a large grant for classroom supplies.

The Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers program is in its third year now. Cho will receive a $5,000 grant, which she told 3TV she plans to spend on more books and flexible seating – i.e. swivel chairs – for her Spanish Immersion class.

Sandpiper Principal Diana Cameron told Cho that this grant is the community's way of thanking her and hundreds of teachers across Arizona.

"You're so deserving," Cameron said to Cho.

3TV reported that 2,500 teachers applied for the grant. Cho and the other winners of the grant will have the opportunity to walk in the Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Parade on December 28, and they will be honored at halftime of the Cheez-It Bowl the evening prior.
