Sarah Elkus

Sarah Elkus, a fourth-grade teacher at Quail Run Elementary School, was named the 2020 Primary Years Programme (PYP) Educator of the Year by the Arizona International Baccalaureate Schools (AZIBS).

“I’m incredibly grateful and humbled to be chosen for this award. It’s proof that I am growing as an educator. It motivates me to continue to look for new ways to support my students and our community,” said Elkus.

Elkus was nominated by Quail Run principal Marta Maynard and Dianna Rubey, International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme coordinator. Maynard explains the nomination, “Sarah is a dedicated educator who develops great relationships with students and works collaboratively with her colleagues. She differentiates instruction to meet the needs of all her students. Sarah consistently looks for ways to incorporate inquiry in every subject she teaches. She creates a classroom environment where students feel free to be open-minded risk-takers. Students work collaboratively and support each other in the learning process. They are very comfortable sharing their ideas because students are given a voice and often a choice in how they learn.”

She received the award virtually on Sept. 17th during the AZIBS 1st Quarterly Meeting.

Since 2010, Quail Run Elementary has been an authorized IB World School. “Students benefit from the IB programme in different ways. It helps them develop problem-solving and collaboration skills through inquiry. The PYP encourages students to look at issues through multiple perspectives, understand and value differences, and realize they can take action to help their community regardless of their age,” said Elkus.

Elkus has been teaching IB for six years in PVSchools. It is her 10 years of teaching overall.
