PVSchools Students Continue to Outperform State Average for ACT® Scores

Wednesday , October 30 , 2019

ACT® scores for high school students attending PVSchools are once again higher than the state averages, according to the information that was released by the College Board.

“The ACT assessment reflects the achievements of our graduates and is an indication of the extent to which they are prepared for college-level work.  The ACT consists of curriculum-based tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science. The ACT is designed to measure the skills needed for success in first-year college coursework,” said Jean Koeppen, director of Assessment.

Through collaborative research with postsecondary institutions nationwide, ACT has established college readiness benchmark scores for designated college courses.

“The ACT assessment has a minimum score needed to indicate that the student has a 50 percent chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75 percent chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college course. PVSchools has demonstrated a higher percentage of students who meet this benchmark when compared to the state averages over the past 5 years. PV students who reach these benchmarks are demonstrating that their high school courses have adequately prepared them in their progression of reaching College Readiness Benchmarks,” added Koeppen.

“Knowing how valuable ACT data can be to PV students as they plan their post-secondary journey, PVSchools will be providing a free ACT assessment to all Juniors in Spring 2020.  Approximately, 2,500 students will take the ACT on March 24, 2020.  The funding for the ACT is being provided by the Arizona Department of Education as part of the new Menu of Assessment options that are being offered to Arizona schools. The Assessment Department applied for this opportunity in July, and we are excited to be able to provide this resource to our PV high school students,” said Koeppen.

To help support our students who take the ACT, the Assessment Department will offer free ACT practice booklets that will be provided through ACT. Additionally, the Assessment Department will be providing students with a free ACT Academy website that will allow them to take practice ACT assessments and receive feedback about individual strengths and areas of improvement. The link to the ACT Academy will be available for students in mid-November, which will be located on the PVSchools College and Career Readiness Opportunities webpage.
