The defending conference state champion Phoenix Pinnacle girls golf team added a national title to its program's history Wednesday.

Pinnacle, one of two Arizona high school girls teams competing, won the 2020 High School Golf National Invitational Tournament in the third and final round Wednesday at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

"That was our huge first goal that we accomplished to be the first girls golf team to be state champions at Pinnacle and now we're the first national champion for girls golf at Pinnacle in the same year," senior Kyla Wilde said.

Pinnacle had a final combined score of 920 for the three-day tournament and collectively shot 56-over to beat the runner-up school from Ohio by six strokes.

The Pioneers ended the first round in second place, three strokes behind Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge's 316. On Tuesday, but steadily gained ground over the next two rounds.

"We had a couple girls who had a couple big scores on a some holes, bad luck. And they just slowly, slowly, slowly worked their way back," Pinnacle head coach Charlie Wilde said. "I'd say the last five holes we probably beat them by eight or nine strokes at least. I don't know if we ever got down but I know we would go up and then down and those last five holes our girls really stepped up."
