Friday , January 24 , 2020
Aleea Tenakhongva, a senior at North Canyon High School, is a candidate for the 2020 Arizona Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix Youth of the Year Award and will be honored during 2020 Celebrating Youth Event on Jan. 24th at the Madison Center for the Arts.
She has been a dedicated member of the Ed Robson Family Branch for 11 years. Aleea explained, “My personality has changed tremendously. I have changed from being a very shy girl to a girl who loves helping and is proud of helping my community. It has also created a pathway into what I want to do for a career. Being a part of the Boys and Girls Club has motivated me and inspired me to become a special education teacher.”
The Youth of the Year program is the premier recognition program celebrating extraordinary achievements of Club members. Each year, one exceptional teen is chosen to represent their organization, and at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix, 12 youth vie for that title. They are chosen as representatives for their individual Clubhouses based on their participation in programs and services, strong commitment to academic success, dedication to a healthy lifestyle, and strong character/leadership skills and values.
“The little kids are the ones who inspire me. They share with me what they want to do when they grow up and I see their passion. I encourage them and let them know that they can accomplish anything they want to do. Also, I love helping them develop some of those skills that they are so passionate about,” added Aleea.
Currently, Aleea is enrolled in North Canyon’s Dual Enrollment program and will receive her Associate’s degree from Paradise Valley Community College in December 2020. She plans to study abroad at Yonsei University in South Korea and will major in music business with a minor in special education.
