AIA Track & Field 2021 State Champions Horizon High School and North canyon High School

The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) held its annual Division II Track & Field State Championship on May 13 and May 15 at Perry High School in Gilbert. Both Horizon High School and North Canyon High School won several State Championships.

Horizon High School

Donovan Castillo won the 400 meter run with a time of 48.17. "Donovan placed fourth in the 400 meter at the 2019 State meet. From that moment, I watched a young student-athlete dedicate himself to achieving greatness. Donovan made a commitment to training both on the track and in the weight room. Even when the pandemic shut down everything, Donovan continued to train. He trained at parks, he ran hills, he did everything he could to give himself a chance to be a champion, and all his hard work paid off on Saturday night," said Coach Brandon Payne.

Donovan Castillo, Charles Ratliff, Anthony Lorenzo, and Javon Burton also won the 4X400 meter relay with a time of 3:18.30. "Our 4x4 relay is made up of four incredible young men and student-athletes. I couldn't be more impressed with a group of athletes that I've coached. All four of these young men came to practice every day and put in an incredible amount of time, effort, and energy into improving every week. They pushed and supported one another. I witnessed the blood, sweat, and tears. I saw the sacrifices they each made to give themselves the best opportunity to win it all. I am extremely proud their hard work paid off and they can call themselves State Champions and School Record Holders,” said Coach Payne.

North Canyon High School

For the past four years, the North Canyon High School Girls Team has won the AIA State Team championship. “The Individual and Team Title was very special because they were not expected to win. Their hard work and grit went unmatched all year, and they won this Title together as a family. Every athlete on this team played a big part in this championship,” said Coach Airabin Justin.
