Help Your Child with Homework - Math Strategies for Parents

Monday , June 10 , 2019

We’ve all been there, trying to help our child with their math homework. Since the implementation of the Arizona Mathematics Standards, math is taught differently than how it was when you were in school. Here are a few strategies to help parents.

Learn About the Math Curriculum

Attending Curriculum Night or Back to School Night at your child’s school is a great way to find out what your child will learn throughout the school year.

Use Online Resources

If you need a refresher course in math concepts, online resources such as Khan Academy or Ted Ed videos are just what you need to help your child with his or her math homework.

Be Positive About Math

When you help your child with math homework or assignments in general, have a positive attitude. Your child may become discouraged if your views about math are negative.

Use Real-World Examples

Since math is used every day, it’s a good idea to incorporate concepts such as fractions, distance and statistics lessons at home to connect math to real-world experiences. Whether it’s teaching your child fractions by measuring ingredients for a recipe or learning to add or subtract money while playing Monopoly, your child will benefit from these math examples.

If you find that you’re struggling to help your child with math, ask the teacher for additional resources that you can use at home.
