Early Release Days for Professional Development Benefits Teachers, Staff, and Students
Monday , August 19 , 2019
Throughout the school year, students will be released early from school, six different times so that PVSchools teachers and staff can participate in schoolwide professional development and professional learning communities.
“During early release days, PVSchools teachers and staff are working in both small and large groups to learn about instructional strategies and ways to meet the needs of their student learners. Different areas of focus revolve around curriculum, trauma-informed schools, restorative practices, and ways to develop the whole child,” said Andrea Morici, director of the Professional Development Department.
Having to find alternative afterschool care during early release days may not be an ideal situation for parents; however, early release days offer professional development opportunities that teachers and staff need in order to meet the needs of their students.
Research shows that the best environment for professional development is embedded during the school day. Doing so gives teachers the opportunity to communicate with other educators and take their learning to the next level. “Effective professional learning enables educators to develop the knowledge and skills they need to address students’ learning challenges. Professional development is effective because it causes teachers to improve their instruction and allows administrators to become better school leaders,” said Ms. Morici.
A few of the topics that teachers work on during their professional development time include Zearn Math, Wonders Language Arts Curriculum, Restorative Practices, Adverse Childhood Experiences, Classroom Management K-12, Kagan Classroom Engagement K-12, AVID Instructional Strategies K-12, and Social Studies and Science Standards K-12.
Throughout the school year, members of the Professional Development Department provide a variety of support for teachers and ESP staff. “Our department offers a wide variety of courses throughout the school year. Classes are offered during the school day (a substitute is provided for the teacher), after the school day, and during early release days,” said Ms. Morici.
