Desert Trails Elementary Gifted Students Complete 85 Levels of Khan Academy's LearnStorm Program
Wednesday , January 13 , 2021
Students in Kimberly Cox’s sixth-grade gifted class at Desert Trails Elementary School completed 85 levels of Khan Academy’s LearnStorm program. LearnStorm is a motivational program that encourages student mastery of skills and tracks the students’ learning. This program is geared to the entire class and encourages a growth mindset, as well as content areas. As a team, students work together to advance levels on the LearnStorm tracker.
Cox enhanced the curriculum with the six-week LearnStorm program that ran from Aug. 17 to Nov. 15. She explains, “I used LearnStorm as a class-building activity and the kids begged for more assignments so they could excel on the LearnStorm tracker. They encouraged one another and they supported each other in their endeavor to increase levels and move on the LearnStorm tracker. Not only did they have fun learning, but they formed a class connection and as a teacher, to see the excitement, enthusiasm, and love-of-learning, it made my day!”
The Khan Academy content that was used included the 6th and 7th-grade math (Illustrative Mathematics), Getting ready for 6th and 7th-grade math, 6th-grade Reading and Language Arts, Coding, Growth Mindset, Personal Finance, and Life Skills.
By participating in LearnStorm Cox’s students were able to partner with UNICEF to provide meals to families, water-treatment tablets, jump ropes, and Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to under-resourced kids and families all over the world.
“My students benefited from this program because the Khan Academy math practice parallels the Illustrative Mathematics content and it enhanced their content knowledge which propelled my student’s confidence, with our district-adopted math curriculum. LearnStorm also helped to boost their confidence because they were able to work as a team to reach a common goal and it helped to form a common bond with each other to help build and foster a positive learning environment. My student’s math confidence and positive growth mindset were just one of many victories that happened by participating in LearnStorm,” said Cox.
Participating teachers whose students progressed past level 15 of the Khan Academy’s LearnStorm program were entered into a drawing.
