All In-Person High School Graduations Canceled

Thursday , June 18 , 2020

Observing the alarming, sharp escalation in cases of COVID-19 in Maricopa County and Arizona, we have been increasingly concerned about the safety of our class of 2020 graduates and their families for our planned graduation ceremonies. Additionally, we have been notified that numerous students from several of our high schools have either tested positive for COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive after attending private graduation parties.

Given this increased health risk and the uptick in cases, we must cancel all in-person graduation ceremonies scheduled at State Farm Stadium on Tuesday, June 23. While the district would have done its best to work with the venue to enforce safety precautions while attendees entered the property, the fact remains that holding this event creates an increased, heightened risk for community spread before, during, and after the event.

Please refer to the information that your high school principal provided regarding distribution of diplomas.

Please note: When picking up diplomas, school staff will be following recommended safety measures, including wearing masks and gloves and practicing social distancing. As you pick-up diplomas, please wear a mask as well. If you believe you have been exposed or are feeling sick, please stay home and follow the Maricopa County Public Health Department’s guidelines.

Like you, we are disappointed to have to cancel graduation ceremonies, but the health, safety, and well-being of our students, families, staff, and community is of the utmost importance to us.

Sincerely,

Jesse Welsh, Ed.D.
Superintendent
