Let me tell you a little bit about me…
My name is Greg Martin. I was born and bred in Phoenix, a rare native Arizonan! I grew up and attended school in the Washington Elementary School District and also attended Cortez High School. I received my B.A. in Political Science at the University of Arizona and M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. I started my career in education in 1990 in the Washington Elementary School District where I taught and chaired middle school social studies for a few years. During this time I also coached a variety of athletic teams.
I moved on to service as an assistant principal in the Peoria Unified School District. I served in this capacity at two different schools over a two-year period. I came to PVUSD in 1999 as the principal at Foothills Elementary School. From 1999-2002, I served the Foothills community and then had the honor of being named principal at Sunrise. I have been principal at Sunrise since 2002.
Some of the accomplishments I am most proud of during my tenure include Sunrise being recognized as an excelling school for many years, the expansion of the English language arts program to a 90-minute block for each student, and the completion and successful implementation of three comprehensive long range plans. Also, I am extremely proud that we were chosen to house the Digital Learning Center for the Gifted, a cutting edge program servicing between 80 and 100 of the most highly gifted students in the valley. We have worked diligently to improve the aesthetics of the Sunrise campus during my tenure. Most recently, we established the most state-of-the-art science labs in the district. Finally, I was fortunate to be recognized as a 2007 inductee into the “Circle of Honor,” an award sponsored by the Arizona Department of Education, which recognizes the top 1% of principals in the state of Arizona. None of this would have been possible without the support and efforts of our great staff, students, and parents.
At Sunrise, there are many opportunities for students to become successful. Our teachers are committed to providing meaningful and engaging instruction. Technology is utilized heavily by both teacher and student. Parents, please encourage your son or daughter to expand his/her horizons by participating in as many activities as possible whether it be within the fine arts, athletics, student clubs, etc. Research shows that the more a student gets actively involved in his/her school, the more successful he/she will be in all aspects of what it means to be a successful student.
Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions or would just like to introduce yourself. I believe in the value of parents, students and the school working together to achieve the success for your child that you expect and deserve.
