5th Grade

Music with Technology 1

Music With Technology I uses common mechanical applications, in cooperation with musical skills, to enhance students’ experience when creating or composing. Students will generate and conceptualize artistic ideas while organizing and developing them through the utilization of music technology. To aid in artistic development, students will go on field trips to various locations in the Phoenix area such as the Music Instrument Museum. There will also be visiting artists who conduct workshops and master classes specifically tailored for NVAA Music students.

 

6th Grade

Music with Technology 2

Music With Technology II reinforces and further develops the musical skills learned and developed from Music With Technology I. Furthermore, students will study music’s unique history, building a better understanding of genres they prefer. They will communicate with professionals from different states and countries to gain an outlook on music in different cultures.To aid in artistic development, students will go on field trips to various locations in the Phoenix area such as the Music Instrument Museum. There will also be visiting artists who conduct workshops and master classes specifically tailored for NVAA Music students.

 

7th Grade

Creative Musicianship 1

Creative Musicianship I explores the development and production of sound. Students will generate and capture musical expressions. Being a hands-on hybrid experience, students will use Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) controllers and Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) such as GarageBand or Ableton Live. To aid in artistic development, students will go on field trips to various locations in the Phoenix area such as the Music Instrument Museum. In addition, students will collaborate with other NVAA programs in projects such as mixing and operating microphones for theater as well as creating music to accompany various dance and visual art projects.

 

8th Grade

Creative Musicianship 2

Creative Musicianship II reinforces and further develops all content from Creative Musicianship I. Fundamentals of sound creation, use of music for expression, and meaning of music within culture are all explored. Students will continue going on field trips and will also have the opportunity to work with visiting artists who conduct workshops and master classes.

 

9th Grade

Comprehensive Musicianship

Comprehensive Musicianship is a course in which students will advance their musical knowledge and skills through multiple forms of instruction, primarily ones involving music technology. Students will synthesize musical materials and discover conceptual connections through individual & group performance, formal analysis, and composition. Students will learn and demonstrate music creation skills and composition techniques. They will use production techniques to perform their created works and audio recording techniques to capture the performances. Skills in keyboard, guitar, vocals, and any other necessary instruments will be acquired. The “How-to” of creating music for a certain audience or a specific instruction will be developed, often through composing music for other NVAA components.

 

10th Grade

Music Studio and Recording Techniques (Commencing 2018-19)

Students reinforce and further develop their comprehensive musicianship skills. They will use their individual creative process and working knowledge of music and technology to enhance live performances. Students will also capture sound from these performances and engineer the audio into high-quality recordings.

 

11th Grade

NVAA Digital Music Composition & Performance (Commencing 2019-20)

Students will learn and demonstrate music creation skills and composition techniques. They will use production techniques to perform their created works and audio recording techniques to capture the performances. Skills in keyboard, guitar, vocals, and any other necessary instruments will be acquired. The “How-to” of creating music for a certain audience or a specific instruction will be developed, often through composing music for other NVAA components.

NVAA Professional Certification Training in Digital Audio Workstation Software & Hardware (Commencing 2019-20)

Students will be trained in the professional Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) Ableton Live and Avid Pro Tools. They will receive instruction and interact with various hardware and software that allows them to grow proficient in using both DAWs. The opportunity to earn a professional certificate in either DAW will be provided.

 

12th Grade

NVAA Music Independent Study in Music & Studio Recording Internship (Commencing 2020-21)

Students will partake in an in-depth study of music in a recording studio setting. They will work with audio engineers, producers, and performers. The class is structured so that students will be placed in local recording studios and receive internship credit.

NVAA Independent Study in Music & Composition – AP Theory (Commmencing 2020-21)

Students will encounter an in-depth study of music theory, form, analysis, and composition techniques. They will create original music through both digital and analog means. The class is structured so that students will be well-prepared to take the AP Music Theory placement exam, which can earn them potential college credit.
