Governing Board Vacancy

The Paradise Valley Unified School District is seeking applicants to fill a vacant seat on the Governing Board. 

Five Governing Board members, elected for staggered terms serve without compensation. Their mission is to set policy for the management of the district, and the superintendent and cabinet are responsible for the execution of these policies. 

The Process

According to Arizona Revised Statutes 15-302, the county school superintendent has the powers and duties to appoint governing board members of school districts to fill all vacancies. Maricopa County School Superintendent Steve Watson will make the appointment. The term of the appointment shall be until the next regular election for governing board members (November 8, 2022), at which time a successor shall be elected to serve the unexpired portion of the term.  

A school district governing board may submit up to three (3) names to the county school superintendent for consideration of an appointment to fill the vacancy, although the county school superintendent is not required to appoint a governing board member from the submitted list of names. 

  1. Application Process

    1. Maricopa County school superintendent posts the vacancy on its website.

    2. Applications will be available beginning Tuesday, November 23, 2021.

    3. Notification of the vacancy and application process will be made publicly available.

  2. Candidate Applications 

    1. Candidates should download and complete the application (download the application).

    2. Applications will be accepted through midnight December 31, 2021 (must be postmarked by that date if sent through U.S. mail).

  3. Board Review of Applications

    1. Board members will be provided copies of all applications received by the deadline and will individually rank their top ten (10) choices. The top three (3) candidates will be identified.

    2. The names of the top three (3) candidates will be forwarded to the Maricopa County school superintendent for consideration.

  4. County Superintendent Review of Applications

    1. All applications will also be forwarded to the Maricopa County School Superintendent’s Office for consideration.

    2. The Maricopa County schools superintendent will review all applications and may interview applicants prior to announcing the appointment.

  1. Be a qualified elector who has resided within the district boundaries at least one (1) year prior to the appointment.

  2. Not be an employee of the District or a spouse of a District employee.
