Professional Development

The PVschools Gifted Education Dept. supports teachers and administrators seeking to understand and effectively address the academic, social, and emotional needs of the District’s gifted students.  Ongoing professional development opportunities are scheduled throughout the school year through workshops, inservices, staff meeting presentations and university coursework.  These offerings cover a variety of topics related to the curriculum and instruction and affective concerns, of gifted students in the elementary, middle and high school years.

  1. The Schoolwide Cluster Grouping Model  (Online Version!) The Schoolwide Cluster Grouping Model is an inclusive model that provides full-time services to all gifted students, facilitates improved achievement for all students, and requires no significant additional funding.  Learn how to implement and support the SCGM, group students for maximum achievement potential, teach in the model, and build parental support.  Examine data showing academic growth for gifted and non-gifted students in the SCGM.

  2. Teaching Strategies for the Gifted Cluster Classroom (Online Version!) This workshop describes highly effective and easy-to-manage techniques teachers at all grade levels can use to motivate and challenge students to move forward at their own achievement levels in gifted cluster classes.  Several methods described allow gifted students to document their previous mastery of grade-level standards. Other methods facilitate faster pacing and more rigor for students who need less practice with grade-level standards. Classroom management techniques also help the teacher operative in a differentiated classroom with comfort and efficiency.

  3. Going Digital!  (Online Version!) Cultivating world-class thinkers requires building digital literacy.  Innovative use of technology becomes tantamount to gifted students’ academic success as the need for digital literacy increases.  In this workshop, you will explore a variety of digital resources, select a few of interests, and create a plan to utilize the site or information with your gifted students.

  4. Teaching in the Schoolwide Cluster Grouping Model. This workshop provides an overview of The Schoolwide Cluster Grouping Model and highlights instructional strategies for adapting regular classroom curriculum and activities to meet the learning needs of high ability learners.  Participants will learn to: 
    • Organize and manage the gifted cluster classroom
    • Make class placements
    • Build support in the school community
    • Differentiate curriculum and instructional in the gifted cluster classroom
    • Build and share lesson extensions with other cluster teachers
    • Monitor academic progress of gifted students
    • Evaluate effectiveness of the model

  5. Interactive and Fun: Vocabulary Activities That Engage. Learn how to easily and quickly add to your students’ academic and general vocabulary through activities that are engaging, hands-on, interactive, and fun.  Learn to use games like Jeopardy, Family Feud, Who Am I, or Which One Doesn't Belong? in building vocabulary.  Make it fun and educational.  Leave with ready to use activities.

  7. Developing Tiered Assignments & Extensions Menus to Increase Challenge Levels   Through Depth and Complexity. Work with fellow teachers to create lessons that incorporate varied levels of depth and complexity.  This guided workshop will develop tiered assignments and extension menus incorporating Bloom’s Taxonomy.  The lessons, archived by grade level and content area, will be added to an online repository and made available to cluster teachers throughout the District.

  11. Reaching All Learners: Making Differentiation Work for Gifted Students
    Use Bertie Kingore’s latest book, Reaching All Learners: Making Differentiation Work, to reach, engage, and challenge all students in your mixed ability class. Participants will receive a copy of the book, and will have time for guided lesson planning using the strategies and activities modeled in this workshop.

  12. Using Khan Academy to Differentiate Math. Teachers in PV schools and around the world are recognizing the value of supplementing math instruction using the Khan Academy. In the first half of this workshop the instructor will demonstrate how Khan Academy is being used in an Honors math class. This includes examining first quarter student data and sharing ways to incorporate Khan Academy into the practice and content delivery aspects of your curriculum. In the second half of the class, participants will explore using Khan Academy as if they were students. Experience the power of seeing real time data to document progress, motivate students, and build perseverance in your students. Participants will become comfortable with the facility in which the Khan Academy can support differentiated instruction through remediation and acceleration. Bring your laptops!


  13. Project Based Learning: The What and the How To. A Common Core-based approach built upon authentic learning activities that engage student interest and motivation in interdisciplinary learning. A well-designed project provokes students to encounter (and struggle with) the central concepts and principles of disciplines. PBL teaches students 21st century skills. These skills include communication and presentation skills, organization and time management skills, research and inquiry skills, self-assessment and reflection skills, and group participation and leadership skills. Explore the elements of PBL and design a project to engage your students in 21st Century Skills and your content. Bring content material and laptop.

  14. Nonfiction Here We Come: Higher Order Thinking through Document Based Questions. Does fictional text dominate your curriculum? Learn a great way to infuse your reading instruction with Document Based Lessons. This workshop will introduce you to Document Based Questions, a motivating and easy way to bring non-fiction to life in your classroom. Don’t miss this chance to learn how to use primary and secondary source documents and promote higher-level critical thinking skills. Participants will receive a set of books.
