60/60 Club teachers honored
The PVschools Governing Board recently honored high school teachers in the 60-60 Club — teachers who have at least 60 percent of their AP students take an AP test, with 60 percent achieving a grade of 3 or higher out of a possible 5. This year's 60/60 Club members are: Paula Burr, Brad Mueller, Paul Schellhase, Jina Ferraro, Caraline Hermandez, JC Kobashi, Karl Johnson, Teresa Smith, Jim Mariner, Von Perot, Anna Royse, Melissa Ganas, and Sam Passamonte. (In Absentia: Tim Mickelsen, Charlyn Morgan-Szabo, Shawn Balzotti, Bill Kimsey, Kevin Storey, Lorrie Wolz, Debbie Grieder, Friedericke Butler, Jay Anderson, Sarah Anderson, Karen Capuano, David Foster, Eric Goldstone, Bob Moore, Lisa Moore, Eric Payne, Kelly Tommasino, Sandy Harness and Joseph Weller.
The following International Baccalaureate teachers were recognized for Excellence in IB Preparation. This honor is for posting a 90% participation rate for the International Baccalaureate exam with 60% achieving the rank of Qualified: Joyce Bertilson, Jean Davis, Patti Johnson, Susan Kohi and Sam Passamonte, Dennis Bush, Matt Case, Teresa Hall, Sally Henzel and Rich Redding.
National School Lunch program online application
The National School Lunch Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Children of families that meet the criteria are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at their school. This includes foster children and children who meet the definition of homeless, runaway, or migrant. If you have questions, call 602-449-2274.
The PV Nutrition and Wellness Department now offers an online application service to determine eligibility and apply for the School Lunch Program.

Elementary school 32 name, mascot and school colors chosen
The PVschools Governing Board approved the named Fireside Elementary for the district's 32nd elementary school, opening August 2012, at 3725 E. Lone Cactus Drive, near Deer Valley Road and 40th Street, in the Fireside residential community. The school mascot will be the mustangs, and the colors navy and red.

At the fall 2011 Core Knowledge Conference in Orlando, Florida, E.D. Hirsch, the founder of Core Knowledge, presented Pinnacle Peak Elementary School Principal Michael Lee and Core Knowledge Coordinator Nancy Stanton, with the Official Core Knowledge school certificate. Two Arrowhead Elementary School second-grade students are winners in the Phoenix Symphony's Paint to Music art contest. The landscapes of the Grand Canyon by Dixsy Galvez and Axel Martinez Garcia will be displayed during the Phoenix Symphony's concert, The Grand Canyon Suite, and will go on tour with Young Artists Arizona Ltd. during the 2012-13 season.

An art print of Pinnacle Peak Elementary School art teacher Gay Kohl is included in the statewide juried printmaking competition on display Feb. 14 - March 21, at the Shemer Art Center and Museum, 5005 E. At the Feb. 3 Arizona Music Educators Association's annual Hall of Fame conference, the PV district was represented with two high honors. Rick Ross, choir director at Shadow Mountain High School, was presented with the O.M. Hartsell Excellence in Teaching Music Award, and Dr. Keith Preston, district fine arts coordinator, won the O.M. Hartsell Excellence in Music Administration award.


Vista Verde Middle School student Boris Yushuvayev is the first place winner in the 11/12 grade category of the Arizona Educational Foundation's 2012 Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest. Boris and two guests will have lunch and take part in the Feb. 14 Arizona Statehood Day ceremony with Governor Brewer. He will read his essay.

Students at Arrowhead Elementary School won an assembly with team mascots Baxter and Bobby from the Arizona Diamondbacks for the high numbers of MAC-Ro (Math Achievement Club by Rodel) workbooks turned in last month. The assembly was sponsored by the Rodel Foundation, which sponsors the MAC-Ro program in high-needs schools.

Education Support Professional of the Month
Shirley Kingsbaker was recognized at the Feb. 2 Board meeting as the Paradise Valley Support Employees Association (PVSEA) Education Support Professional of the month. Shirley is an ESP for PVschools occupational therapists in the Special Ed department and is based at Roadrunner School. She received a framed certificate donated by Framing FriendZ, and a floral arrangement donated by Phoenix Flowers.
PVEA selects Valerie Cooksey as PROPS recipient
Whispering Wind Academy / Desert Springs Preparatory Elementary School teacher Valerie Cooksey was recognized as the February recipient of the PVEA Recognition of Professional Standards (PROPS) award.

Liberty Elementary to present Beauty and the Beast, Jr. musical
The Liberty Elementary School chorus and musical theater will present four performances of Beauty and the Beast, Jr.: Friday and Saturday evenings, Feb. 24 and 25 at 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday afternoons, Feb. 25 and 26 at 2 p.m. All performances, which are open to the public, will be held in the Liberty multi-purpose room, 5125 E. Marilyn in Scottsdale. Tickets are $2 in advance and $3 at the
door. Advance tickets may be purchased in the front office of the school. Musical director is Liberty vocal music teacher Lori Broermann, assisted by Bronwin Barilla, and former student and assistant director, Jordan Morales, a student at Horizon High School.
